DAV Hindi School Singapore Marks Six Decades of Cultural and Linguistic Excellence

Singapore, 10 July 2025 — DAV Hindi School Singapore, a cornerstone of Hindi language education since its inception in 1957, continues to flourish as the largest and most respected Hindi-medium institution in the city-state, serving more than 3,600 learners across nine centres and over 40 partner schools .

A Legacy Born from Community Vision (1957–1963)
The school was officially registered in 1957 amid growing demand for Hindi instruction not covered by Singapore’s mainstream English-medium curriculum. Early struggles over facilities were surmounted through community fundraising, culminating in the construction of a dedicated three-storey building on Syed Alwi Road in 1963.

Breaking New Ground in Language Policy
In a milestone move in 1989, then–Education Minister Dr Tony Tan announced that Hindi would be recognised as a Second Language for the GCE O‑Level exams. This development catalysed a surge in interest and enrolments.

Current Scale and Quality
Today, the school boasts a highly-qualified team of 130 teachers and 10 full-time administrative staff. It operates out of nine weekend centres and parallels across state schools, giving structure to a diverse and dynamic curriculum.

360° Education: Language Meets Culture
Delivering more than just language lessons, DAV’s holistic pedagogy places culture at its heart. Students partake in classical dance, music, drama, workshops, and celebratory events like Diwali and Holi—bridging the gap between linguistic ability and cultural understanding.

Exam-Ready Programs with Outstanding Results
The school offers structured preparation for PSLE, O‑Level, and A‑Level Hindi exams, maintaining consistently high pass rates. Their flexible teaching model—available both online and in-person—caters to a broad demographic, from kindergarten learners to adult education seekers.

Landmark 60th Anniversary Celebrations
This month, DAV Hindi School Singapore commemorates 60 years of service with a series of events, including cultural showcases, student workshops, alumni gatherings, and celebratory performances. Principal Om Prakash Rai remarked: “Our 60‑year journey is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our teachers, staff, and the local community. We look forward to continuing our mission of empowering learners through language and heritage”.

Future Outlook: Sustaining Language and Culture
As Singapore’s Hindi-speaking community evolves, the school remains steadfast in Swami Dayanand Saraswati’s founding principle: to provide inclusive, values-based education. Innovations in online learning, new enrichment programs, and deeper alumni engagement form part of DAV’s roadmap as it enters its next chapter.
